Non-profit organizations are often housed in spectacular buildings that have absolutely no connection to the organization's history or mission. Elmhurst's New Life Fellowship Church is one such organization, inhabiting a former clubhouse completed in 1924 for the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge No. 878. Designed by the Ballinger Company, the building's exterior is designed in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, while its eclectic interiors feature Adamesque-, Tudor- and Mayan-inspired motifs. Having acquired the building in 2001, New Life Fellowship Church was tasked with adapting the building to meet its needs both as a house of worship and as a community resource while also addressing ongoing maintenance issues. In 2014, GDPC was asked to assist the organization in applying for a matching grant from New York State's CFA program to address the maintenance component. As a result of GDPC's efforts, New Life was listed on the National Register of Historic Places—a prerequisite for grant eligibility—and obtained a $500,000 matching grant to address its ongoing maintenance issues. |
